  • Tony Slavin created a blog entry Joomla 1.6 is here!...

Joomla! has announced the immediate availability of the next generation of Joomla. Version 1.6 is now available to download and use on live websites.

But what does this mean for you?

If you already have a Joomla site ...

... despite all the improvements, there is no need to rush to update your site. Unlike previous minor updates (e.g. version 1.5.21 to 1.5.22) there is no way to simply copy the new files over your existing files. This is a major update that will require significant changes to your site. Both your site template and any extensions you are using will need to be updated to be compatible.

... and despite the fact that there has been an enormous amount of time dedicated to releasing a stable version, many people will choose to wait a while until "things settle down".

If you are contemplating using Joomla for the first time ...

... you may still want to develop using version 1.5. There are over 6500 extensions that are compatible with version 1.5 sites. It will take quite some time for developers to build versions that are compatible with version 1.6.

... there are many improvements with version 1.6 but two features in particular are worth noting. The first is the way Joomla stores articles. Version 1.5 uses a simple 2-level system; sections and categories. Version 1.6 uses unlimited nested categories. Also, the access control is now far more sophisticated, allowing you to create groups and control who can view or edit various parts of your site. If you have a specific need for either of these features then you should start exploring version 1.6.
